Mary Wesley’s remarkable journey through life began on January 31, 1937, in Quitman, Mississippi. Born as Mary Lousie Ray to her parent Alex Ray and Minnie McCarty, Mary emerged as a beacon of resilience, courage, and determination in the face of adversity.
Growing up as thee second of eleven children in a household led by Mother Minnie, Mary’s early years were marked by both hardship and strength.
Tragedy struck when Mary was just three years old, as her father Alex Ray, lost his life due to his outspokenness as a black man.
This early loss, though tragic, seemed to shape Mary’s character, as she inherited her father’s outspoken spirit and carried it forward with a determination to challenge injustice.
Inheriting the legacy of her father’s outspoken nature, Mary demonstrated a fearlessness in standing up for what she believed in. Despite growing up in poverty, Mary’s independent and proud nature propelled her forward. She pursued education until the 11th grade, when the allure of Las Vegas, Nevada, beckoned her with the promise of new opportunities.
In the vibrant city of Las Vegas, Mary’s path intersected with that of David Wesley, a meeting that would mark the beginning of a significant chapter in her life. They married and welcomed eight children into the world, a testament to their shared journey through the complexities of life. Although their paths diverged after a few years, Mary was left as the resilient and determined matriarch of a large family, facing the challenges of raising eight children on a single income.
The necessity of welfare assistance wasn’t lost on Mary, even though it conflicted with her independent and hardworking nature. Fueled by a sense of injustice and a desire for change, Mary joined forces with other welfare mothers in the late 1960s and early 1970s. united by a common cause, they founded Operation Life, a grassroots movement that aimed to dismantle stereotypes surrounding welfare recipients and address the government’s unjust termination of benefits.
Through Operation Life, Mary Wesely’s legacy of advocacy and empowerment took root in the Westside Las Vegas community. This transformative initiative brought forth the first medical cling, the Women Infant Children (WIC) program, a library, a senior citizen housing complex, a day care center, and a job training office.
Mary’s heart for equal care and opportunities transcended racial boundaries, ensuring that all children and families received the support they deserved.
As Operation Life began to thrive, Mary’s focus shifted to nurturing her family while still actively participating in her community. With unwavering dedication, she raised not only her own children but also 17 grandchildren, embodying the essence of a true mother and role model to many.
